Why Do We Charge For Hearing Tests?

High street chains often offer free hearing tests. They do this to entice customers in and then put strict sales targets in place for hearing aid sales.

Often, people can feel pressured into getting hearing aids after a test. Sometimes, certain brands are pushed that might not be the best fit.

We believe your care comes first. We charge a small fee to cover our costs. Then there is no pressure to make a sale.

We have no deals with hearing aid suppliers, and our ethos is to give you the best possible care and advice.

Are You Struggling With Your Hearing?

“I know how isolating hearing difficulties can feel. You start missing parts of conversations, avoiding noisy places, or feeling frustrated when TV dialogue just isn’t clear enough.

For many people, these changes happen gradually, so it’s easy to put off getting help, but I’ve seen how life-changing it can be when you finally do.

That’s why at Alresford Hearing Studio, we take the time to really listen to your story and understand your lifestyle before we even begin the test. Our goal isn’t just to measure your hearing, it’s to give you answers, clarity, and the confidence to enjoy every conversation and moment again.

I started this clinic to provide the kind of hearing care I’d want for my own family: thorough, honest, and centred on you.”

★★★★★
Fantastic experience at Alresford Hearing Studio. Sam was very professional and took the time to explain the process of my appointment. I had ear screen and hearing test which showed a slight hearing loss. Sam pointed out that it didn't warrant a hearing aid just yet but to monitor and assess the hearing. No hard sale or being pushed to spend £££ on something that isn't necessary just yet. Top service and attention to detail. Thank you Sam.

Excellent service, very professional and friendly. I wanted to replace my NHS hearing aids for a more up to date model. The audiologist, Sam Longman, did a thorough test of my hearing and talked me through the options. At no time did I feel under pressure to make a decision. I am extremely happy with the hearing aids I got and the after care offered. Thank you Sam and Jodie for the care and attention you give your customers.

After a couple of years trying NHS hearing aids I have at last bitten the bullet and gone private through Alresford Hearing Studio. The aids recommended by Sam are proving to be a revelation. The sounds I can now hear, with a variety of settings changed via my mobile phone, are so much better and well worth the money spent. I can wholeheartedly recommend Sam and the Studio for the service provided thus far where everything is well explained and nothing appears too much trouble.

However, the problem was seriously impacting on my life when I finally contacted Sam towards the end of last year to seek professional help. The care, time and expertise shown to me far exceeded my expectations and I now have two discreet hearing aids that have truly transformed my life. The after service has been second to none and I have no hesitation in recommending their services to anyone struggling with hearing loss.Sent from my iPadThe whole procedure was carried out in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere in a very professional manner. Many thanks also to Sam Longman.I have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending Alresford Hearing Studio.

As we got home Mum stated that she had had “a fabulous morning”. Sam and the team have looked after Mum from the moment we arrived as new clients in the autumn. They are professional, knowledgeable and kind. The studio is calming, friendly and brilliantly staffed. The coffee is rather good too! After an initial visit for wax removal I signed Mum up for regular visits and this morning we collected her new hearing aids. Nothing was too much trouble - everything explained beautifully and clearly in a non-patronising manner - to both myself and Mum! Not only is she hearing beautifully, but she and I have confidence in this as a place of understanding and safety for future visits. Unreserved recommendation - and many grateful thanks!

Our 8-Step Process

1. A Warm Welcome

From the moment you arrive, we want you to feel at ease. You’ll be welcomed with a warm smile, a fresh cup of tea or coffee, and the opportunity to settle into our calm, comfortable clinic environment.

Before we begin, we take a few moments to introduce ourselves properly. Your audiologist will share a bit about their experience, training, and why they’re passionate about hearing care. Alresford Hearing Studio was founded in 2019 with one mission: to bring exceptional, independent hearing care to our community. We’re proud to be HCPC-registered and known for offering honest, expert advice.

2. Lifestyle Consultation

Understanding your hearing challenges in the context of your daily life is crucial to providing the right support. This discussion helps us tailor our advice and recommend hearing solutions that match your specific lifestyle and listening needs.

We’ll talk about:

  • Your work and social life – Do you struggle to follow conversations in meetings or noisy restaurants?
  • Home life – Do you turn the TV up louder than others prefer?
  • Phone use and tech comfort – Are you comfortable using smartphones or would you prefer something simpler?
  • Hobbies and interests – Perhaps you sing in a choir, enjoy nature walks, or love spending time with grandchildren.

3. Medical History of Your Ears

We’ll take a brief but important medical history. This step helps us rule out underlying issues and ensure your hearing test is safe and appropriate. It includes:

  • Any past ear infections or surgeries
  • Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
  • Balance issues
  • Noise exposure (e.g., loud work environments, concerts)

4. Video Otoscopy

We begin your examination by gently inspecting your ear canals and eardrums using a video otoscope. This state-of-the-art device allows both you and your audiologist to see a clear image of the inside of your ear on a screen. It’s a great way to better understand your own ears and for us to explain exactly what we’re seeing.

You’ll be able to see:

  • If there’s any wax buildup
  • Signs of infection or irritation
  • The general health of your eardrum

5. Tympanometry

Tympanometry is a simple, quick test that assesses how well your middle ear is functioning. A small probe is placed in your ear, and a gentle puff of air is used to measure how your eardrum responds to pressure. It’s entirely painless and provides valuable insights before we move on to testing your hearing.

This test can help detect:

  • Blockages (like fluid or wax)
  • Eustachian tube dysfunction
  • Middle ear infections
  • Perforated eardrums

6. Pure Tone Audiometry & Speech Testing

This is the core part of the hearing test. You’ll wear a set of headphones and be asked to press a button whenever you hear a tone. These tones will vary in pitch and volume to determine the softest sounds you can hear at different frequencies.

We also test with a small bone conductor placed behind your ear to check how sound travels through your skull directly to the inner ear.

This step allows us to create a detailed audiogram, a visual map of your hearing ability, which forms the basis for diagnosis and treatment options.

To complement the tone test, we also carry out speech testing — which assesses how well you understand spoken words, especially in more realistic, everyday listening conditions.

You’ll listen to recorded words or sentences through headphones or speakers and repeat them back. This test is especially useful in highlighting the real-world effects of hearing loss, and in choosing the right hearing aid settings or features if needed. This helps us understand:

  • How clearly you hear and process speech
  • Whether you struggle more in quiet or noisy environments
  • How well your brain interprets sound once it’s heard

7. Results & Diagnostic Explanation

We’ll go through your results in a clear, visual way. You’ll see your audiogram and speech scores, and how they relate to everyday sounds, like birdsong, speech, or traffic.

There’s no rush; we’ll answer any questions you have and make sure you feel informed and empowered about your hearing health.

We’ll explain:

  • The type of Hearing loss (e.g., sensorineural, conductive, or mixed)
  • The severity and how it might be affecting your daily life

8. Technical Demonstration of Hearing Aids & Accessories

If hearing loss is detected, we’ll demonstrate the latest hearing aid technology. Based on the lifestyle consultation, we’ll show you solutions tailored to your needs, whether that’s better hearing in noise, streaming from your phone, or discreet design.

Our goal is to help you find a solution that fits not just your ears, but your life.

You’ll have a chance to:

  • See and hold different models (invisible, rechargeable, Bluetooth-enabled)
  • Understand accessories that may help (TV streamers, remote mics, phone apps)
  • Learn how modern hearing aids adapt to your environment automatically
